“How long will it take?” is one of the first questions we’re asked — and one of the questions most kitchen companies answer vaguely.
Here’s an honest answer, based on 35 years of kitchen renovations on the Gold Coast.
The Full Timeline: From First Call to Final Handover
Design and Approval — 2 to 4 weeks
The design phase starts with a free consultation at your home. We measure the space, understand your brief, and begin developing the design. This typically involves one or two rounds of revisions before you give your final sign-off.
This phase can be shorter if you know exactly what you want, and longer if the design is complex or involves significant structural changes.
Manufacturing — 3 to 6 weeks
Once the design is approved, your cabinetry goes into production. At Konnect Kitchens, all cabinetry is manufactured locally to your exact specifications — not ordered from an interstate factory or assembled from flat-pack components.
Manufacturing time depends on factory scheduling and the complexity of the design. We’ll give you a specific manufacturing lead time at the point of approval.
Pre-Installation Preparation — 1 week
Before installation begins, we coordinate all the associated trades — plumber, electrician, tiler — to ensure they’re available in the right sequence. This coordination is something many kitchen companies manage poorly. We plan it in advance.
Installation — 1 to 3 weeks
The installation phase is when you’ll be without a full kitchen. The timeline here depends on the scope of the renovation:
- Kitchen makeover (new doors, benchtop, hardware): 3–5 days
- Mid-range full renovation: 7–10 days
- Large or complex renovation: 2–3 weeks
During installation, we manage all the trades in sequence — demolition, cabinetry, benchtop templating and installation, splashback tiling, plumbing reconnection, electrical fit-off. Each trade follows the previous one without gaps.
Total Timeline
From first consultation to keys in hand: 8 to 14 weeks for a standard full renovation.
Any company promising a full custom renovation significantly faster than this is either cutting corners somewhere or hasn’t been straight with you about what’s included.
Factors That Can Extend the Timeline
Most renovation delays come from one of four sources:
Decision delays
The design and approval phase can stretch if decisions are deferred. The most common cause of a delayed renovation start is indecision on benchtop material or cabinetry finish. We mitigate this with clear decision deadlines built into the project plan.
Structural surprises
Demolition occasionally reveals unexpected conditions — old plumbing that needs replacing, structural elements that complicate the planned layout, or asbestos in kitchens built before 1990. These are rare, but they happen. We address them transparently and adjust the timeline accordingly.
Material lead times
Certain materials — premium stone slabs, specific appliances, imported hardware — have longer lead times. We identify these early in the design process and build them into the schedule.
Trade coordination failures
This is the most common cause of delays in kitchen renovations managed by companies that rely on subcontractors. When the plumber doesn’t show up on the day the electrician needs the space, the whole schedule slips. Our in-house approach eliminates most of this risk.
Preparing for the Installation Period
Being without a kitchen for 1–3 weeks is manageable with preparation:
- Set up a temporary kitchen in another room — microwave, kettle, toaster, fridge
- Stock up on easy meals and plan for some takeaway
- Clear the kitchen completely before demolition day
- Protect adjacent flooring and furniture from dust
