The Decision That Shapes Everything Else

Every decision in your kitchen renovation — the materials, the layout, the budget, the timeline — flows from one choice: who you work with.

Choose the right kitchen designer and you’ll end up with a kitchen that exceeds your expectations, delivered on time and on budget, with no surprises. Choose the wrong one and you’ll spend the renovation managing problems you were never warned about.

Here’s how to make the right choice.

The Difference Between a Designer and a Salesperson

Many kitchen companies employ salespeople who are trained to present, not design. They’ll show you a range of doors, quote you from a price list, and call it a design consultation.

A real kitchen designer asks different questions. They want to understand how you cook. They’ll assess your existing space critically — including things that don’t work about it. They’ll challenge choices that look good in a showroom but don’t perform well in a real kitchen. They’ll push back if you’re about to make a decision you’ll regret.

The difference is obvious within the first ten minutes of a conversation.

Five Questions to Ask Every Kitchen Designer

1. Are you QBCC licensed?

In Queensland, any kitchen renovation over $3,300 must be carried out by a QBCC-licensed contractor. Ask for the licence number. Verify it at qbcc.qld.gov.au. If they can’t provide a licence number, the conversation is over.

2. Who actually builds the kitchen?

Some kitchen companies design in-house and subcontract the installation to whoever is available. Others have their own installation crews. Ask directly who will be on site, whether they’re employees or subcontractors, and whether the same team manages the project from start to finish.

3. Can I see completed projects on the Gold Coast?

Not renders. Not 3D visualisations. Not interstate projects. Completed kitchens, built on the Gold Coast, in homes like yours. Ask to see the portfolio. Ask if any of their past clients are willing to speak with you.

4. How do you handle variations?

In a renovation, variations happen. Materials arrive damaged. Unexpected site conditions require design changes. The question isn’t whether variations will occur — it’s how they’re handled. A good kitchen company has a clear, transparent process for variations. A poor one uses them as an opportunity to inflate the final cost.

5. What does your warranty cover?

Ask specifically: what is covered, for how long, and what is the process for making a claim? A company confident in their work will answer this clearly and directly.
